What is the difference between Hunter’s Free and Starter?

Once you move from Hunters’ Free Plan to the Starter Tier, the question changes from "This tool is awesome!" to "Now I have to make some deals." Essentially, the Free Plan is a perpetual trial, and you'll receive approximately 50 credits per month. If you are going to look up one person every week, 50 credits may be sufficient. You'll get to play with the Chrome Extension, and you'll be able to send light campaigns to 500 individuals; however, you’ll immediately hit a wall when you attempt to download a complete CSV file of your research, and you'll only be allowed to establish a single email account. From my perspective, the Free Plan is excellent for sharpening your skills as long as you don’t intend on using it for an actual sales process.


On the other hand, the Starter Plan, usually priced at $49 monthly, provides a huge leap forward in functionality, and with a hunter promo code you can reduce the initial cost while unlocking the ability to download your leads. I would recommend the Starter Plan for individual consultants or small teams because you will receive 2000 credits (40 times the number of credits received through the Free Plan), and you'll be able to establish links to up to 3 email accounts. Having multiple email accounts available is essential; I believe that having multiple email accounts available is the bare minimum requirement to ensure acceptable deliverability. Additionally, with the Starter Plan, you'll gain access to advanced filters within the "Discover" database, including searches based upon the specific technologies a company utilizes. In my professional experience, if you are seriously considering using an outbound strategy, you will likely find the Free Version of Hunters to be restrictive; the Starter Plan is the first time that the platform enables you to operate effectively.

What is the difference between Hunter’s Growth and Scale?

Hunter’s Scale plan and its predecessor, Growth plan, represent two vastly different approaches for the same business objective: running a scalable sales operation with a growing number of reps and/or increasing volume of emails sent through the platform. A Growth plan represents “the engine” of an average size agency or a medium to large-sized SDR organization where you would be able to send at least 10,000 monthly emails while connecting only up to 10 email addresses (i.e., the domain name and password associated with those email addresses). This is generally sufficient for smaller agencies/SDR teams as they are testing multiple messages (different subject lines, copy, etc.), especially when paired with a cold email outreach tool like Instantly.ai to maximize deliverability at scale.


However, when you upgrade to Hunter’s Scale plan, you will be able to send significantly more email per month (25,000), and most importantly, connect up to 20 email accounts. As such, we believe the Scale plan is geared toward organizations that have identified their winning formula and now simply want to put more fuel into the fire. While both plans provide the ability to customize tracking domains for deliverability purposes, we believe that the scale plan is geared toward organizations that require the ability to send high volumes of emails (e.g., thousands) via numerous burners or secondary domains to protect their primary brand. In our professional view, the Scale plan allows you to grow beyond the limitations of how many emails can be sent, while the Growth plan focuses on how you can send them. Therefore, if you find yourself consistently checking your monthly credit balance, or receiving errors due to reaching recipient limits in the middle of the month while on a Growth plan, we believe that upgrading to a Scale plan is a no-brainer to maintain your momentum without the additional overhead of manually managing your sending resources.

What is the difference between Hunter’s Scale and Enterprise?

Whether you will be placed in an existing container or if one is made for you depends on which Hunter Scale or Enterprise plans you choose. The scale plan is the largest 'out-of-the-box' option available from Hunter, costing approximately $299 per month with 25,000 monthly credits and 20 email addresses. As far as we know, this is the maximum number of credits most aggressive outbound teams can manage. For large teams, using high volume, or running extremely large lists (but operating within software boundaries), we believe this is the ideal solution.


For example, we find that the majority of users who use the 20-account limitation is what limits them from going beyond the scale plan-it allows for a serious volume of emails without having to go through the process of creating a "custom" conversation with a Hunter sales representative.


Hunter's Enterprise tier is completely different from Hunter's Scale Tier. While we don't feel like this is merely about adding additional credits, it feels like removing the obstacles that come with being a large-scale operation. Once you exceed the 25,000 credit threshold, we recommend moving to the Enterprise tier since it provides a custom quota, and most importantly, a dedicated account manager. As professionals, we believe having a direct line to a Hunter employee is worth the premium cost when managing complex API integrations or numerous team members. We believe that if you are prospecting, as a critical component of your company's infrastructure, then you should no longer be utilizing a self-serve plan.

Which Hunter plan should I choose for my startup?

Ultimately, you're going to be choosing a plan based on how much money you're going to invest into inbound marketing as a primary growth channel.


If you are a small operation trying to obtain a handful of important contacts each month, then the free option exists, however, we believe this free option is primarily designed so that users can learn how the user interface works. As soon as you begin to treat prospecting as an actual business process, you'll likely quickly realize that the free option has very limited credit limits which can limit the scope of what you can accomplish.


We would recommend the Starter option for individuals who are in the early stages of creating a repeatable list, since this option provides CSV export options so you can do something with the data you discover.


For sales teams or agencies who are beyond the experimental phase, we believe the Growth option is the true "start" point. The Growth option allows users to use 10 connected email accounts along with custom tracking domains. Yes, Hunter does indeed have a forever free option in the SaaS world and it is likely the most functional "forever free" option in the SaaS space today. Unlike those pesky seven day trials that cut you off at the very moment you are getting something done with them, Hunter's forever free option is a true tier that resets every single month. This will give you complete access to the core of Hunter (Domain Search, Email Finder & Verifier) so you can actually do some work without having to use a credit card. We think this is an incredibly smart decision by Hunter as it allows users to test/verify the quality of the data they are looking to obtain prior to committing to a paid subscription.


We believe the best part of the forever free version of Hunter is that it is truly a research/search tool and not limited to simply a search tool like many other email finding services. The Campaigns feature included in the forever free version also gives users the ability to send automated cold emails and track opens on those emails directly from the forever free dashboard. What are the limitations of Hunter's free trial?

Hunter provides a very good free option, and while it is a great way to begin with some very generous limits, once you attempt to scale this product beyond a casual hobby, the limits of the free version will quickly become apparent. While we consider the 50 monthly credits to be the most glaring "gotcha," we consider the inability to export your results to a CSV file to be an even bigger "gotcha." If you have found 50 leads through Hunter, they remain as a list within Hunter; you are forced to manually copy and paste each lead into your CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system, which we believe to be a complete waste of time and a major productivity killer for any company doing serious outreach.


Additionally, we feel that limiting you to only one email account as part of the free version is a huge limitation. We would recommend connecting no less than two to three accounts in order to provide protection to your domain health for any serious outreach efforts, however, the free version limits you to a single "one-and-done" account connection. Finally, you will not receive the same level of deliverability that comes with a paid version of Hunter such as custom tracking domains, nor will you be able to attach files or images to your emails. As such, while we do feel that the free version is a great sandbox, we believe that for any type of serious growth, you will hit the ceilings provided by the basic filters and the 500 recipient campaign cap. Therefore, we believe that the free version is meant to serve as a means to get started with Hunter, but to ultimately move you towards a paid version.

All of Hunter's plans are arranged according to an ascending staircase (or ladder) that will assist you in progressing from testing a hypothesis to running a full-fledged lead generation machine. Each plan centers on one single credit-based system; One Credit for a Search, Half a Credit for a Verification. As we believe this is much more clean and easier to manage than prior systems where you would have had to manage multiple buckets; We believe the hierarchy of the plans was intentionally structured by Hunter. The first step is a free version of their plans so you can get a sense of the quality of the data; Then as you move up through the pricing levels, the "power" functions such as exporting to CSV files, advanced filtering, and connecting inboxes, etc., begin to become available.


We believe there is one major structural difference in the way the plans are built out when comparing the starter to growth. Although we believe the Starter Plan is perfect for the individual user; We recommend the Growth as the "true pro" baseline because it introduces the necessary infrastructure to ensure you can survive current spam filters, including 10 email addresses and custom tracking. We believe the leap to Scale and Enterprise, although providing additional tools, is more focused on increasing the volume of searches and support that will be needed. We believe Hunter did a great job in making "unlimited team members" a common feature across all of the plans, which we believe is a huge advantage over many competitors who charge per seat. We suggest selecting a plan tier based on your "monthly sending rhythm", rather than the amount of searches you need.

What makes Hunter worth using?

In my opinion, the reason Hunter is worth using is because it does NOT attempt to be an "everything for everybody" tool, instead it stays focused on the single task at hand of getting you into a professional inbox without all of the fluff. I believe the largest benefit of Hunter (and the reason I believe it is so much better than its competition) isn’t even the large database it has – but rather the level of transparency it uses to provide you with the information you are looking for. I think the "proof of life" provided by Hunter for their data, such as providing you with the exact source of each email and the "discovery date", is a huge advantage over the black box tools that simply tell you how accurate their data is without allowing you to see how it was obtained.


I would also recommend Hunter due to the speed-to-value of the tool. In less than 5 minutes, you will be able to take a company name and have a verified automated sequence launched against that company. In my professional experience, I believe the user interface of Hunter is probably the cleanest in the SaaS industry. The fact that there is a very small learning curve when using Hunter is a welcome change to me from the bloated and complex enterprise software dashboards of some of Hunters' competitors. While Hunter may not have as much "intent data" as a competitor such as Apollo, I believe the simple nature of Hunter's focus on pure PR outreach, link building, or sales prospecting is a major advantage in those specific areas. In my opinion, if you value your time and want to know that the data you receive is verifiable by your own eyes, Hunter is the gold standard.

Which types of professionals benefit most from Hunter?

The users that get the absolute most out of Hunter are typically the "high-intent" hunters (people who are serious about finding accurate information). The most obvious example would be SDR's/Sales Development teams; these teams tend to prioritize accuracy over quantity. For example, sales reps who use Hunter will have the ability to enter a conversation with evidence that they've done research. This makes Hunter a perfect fit for teams that need to find the exact "Head of Growth" at a start-up versus using a shotgun approach throughout an industry.

We generally recommend Hunter to teams which value a high quality "Sender Reputation". In our opinion, the costs of the Growth or Scale plans are justifiable if it protects your main domain from being flagged by spam filters resulting from high bounce rates. We also believe the addition of Campaigns (a native cold email tool) and the Chrome extension add an additional layer of convenience to Hunter that all-in-one platforms tend to over complicate. However, if you are a high volume operation that requires 50,000 leads per month and do not concern yourself with a 10% bounce rate, we feel that you may find Hunter's credit-to-price ratio too expensive. Ultimately, we believe the value of Hunter is available to those that want a precise, reliable tool rather than a large, noisy database.

To date, based on my own experiences, I believe the Growth plan is the 'go-to' or "sweet spot" and by far the most commonly selected option for the typical business using Hunter. The Starter plan is ideal for individuals however, I believe the Growth tier is when the platform really starts to be beneficial to a team. Most of the individuals I speak with prefer the Growth plan because it provides a balance of 10,000 monthly credits and the infrastructure you will need to grow your outreach and avoid being flagged as a spammer.


I believe the real reason the Growth plan is preferred over the other plans, is not simply because of the number of credits, but also because of the 10 email account connections and custom tracking domains. To me, professionally speaking, if you are serious about maintaining good deliverability, you will need these custom domains to make sure your tracking pixels do not appear to be similar to every one else's. I would suggest the Growth plan for smaller agencies and expanding sales teams since it allows for enough room to test various campaigns across multiple inboxes.


If you are going to do more than simply casual prospecting, I believe that the Growth plan is the least restrictive option under 20K credits.
