My top 3 Mercury alternatives
By Jean-Loup Karst, Co-founder @Secret
Brex, Qonto, and Shine stood out for how they tackle money ops from different angles: spend-control automation, permissioned multi-user banking, and lightweight billing-plus-banking for solos.
Brex
In addition to my Bank Ledger (I use it), I also use Brex. It offers me to create either Virtual Cards or Physical Cards by Team; Per-Card Limits; Route Charges thru Budget Rules. All of these tools are connected together as part of an end-to-end Workflow from Card(s) to Reimbursements & Bill Pay. Therefore, receipt and General Ledger Coding are not a Month End Scavenger Hunt. My favorite way to utilize Ghost Cards (Virtual Vendor Dedicated Cards) is for SaaS Renewals; Once I Cancel the Service, I simply disable the Card. Brex Offers Essential Services for Free & Premium for $12.00/User/Month if you require Custom Policies and Automated Approvals. If your team Books Trips, Brex Travel allows both Card Charges and Trip Itinerary be placed in the same Spend Timeline.
Qonto
I pick Qonto when I’m operating with an IBAN-first setup: opening gives me an IBAN, and I can order Qonto MasterCards from the app. The killer detail for me is multi-user access with customizable permissions, plus the ability to freeze cards instantly. Pricing is explicit: Basic $11/month, Smart $23/month, Premium $45/month, so I can map cost to team size and approval needs.
Shine
For a solo operator who wants banking plus lightweight admin, I lean toward Shine. It bundles a 100% online pro account with an integrated billing tool, budgeting tools, and simplified accounting, and it even pitches business loans at preferred rates. The plans are straightforward: Basic $8/month, Premium $15/month, Business $28/month. I’d use it for invoicing and expense tracking before I’m ready for heavier finance ops.

QuickBooks Sync + Receipt Matching for Faster Close
We switched to Brex mainly for spend controls, but I ended up liking the accounting side just as much since the QuickBooks sync and receipt matching cut down our month-end cleanup quite a bit

Why is Brex a good alternative to Mercury?
I recommend Brex most when I’m supporting a finance/ops lead who’s drowning in card exceptions and reimbursements. I can issue cards per employee or per vendor, set limits and expiry dates for one-off purchases, and keep recurring SaaS on vendor-dedicated virtual cards so cancellations are as simple as disabling the number. The moment the team grows, Premium at $12 per user/month becomes justifiable because custom expense policies and automated approval workflows reduce “Slack me for approval” noise. I also like that cards, bill pay, reimbursements, and travel can live in one spend timeline, which makes month-end reconciliation less about hunting receipts and more about validating policies. If the company has multiple entities or international spend, Brex’s focus on centralized controls is usually what I’m actually shopping for.

I like that invoices, transfers, and account statements are all in one place, and the bookkeeping export is straightforward enough that our accountant stopped chasing us for missing files every month

Why is Qonto a good alternative to Mercury?
Qonto is the alternative I reach for when the company’s day-to-day banking is IBAN/SEPA-driven and the team needs role-based access. On a small agency, I can give each person their own user login, set permissions so only managers can initiate payments, and still let bookkeepers export or integrate transactions for accounting. The freeze-card control is practical for contractors: I can shut off a card the minute a project ends without closing the whole account. I also like the multiple-accounts approach for separating VAT/tax money, client funds, or project budgets without spinning up extra banks. Because pricing is tiered (Basic $11, Smart $23, Premium $45 per month), I can start cheap for a founder-and-assistant setup and move up when approvals and integrations matter more than the base account cost.
What are the differences between Qonto and Mercury?
With Mercury, I’m getting US-based checking and savings with $0/month basics, plus tools like drag-and-drop Bill Pay and an IO Mastercard that can earn 1.5% cashback. Mercury’s upgrade path is subscriptions (Plus $29.90/month, Pro $299/month) for things like recurring invoices, an invoicing API, and NetSuite categorizations. Qonto is structured more like a paid business account from day one: Basic $11/month, Smart $23/month, Premium $45/month. Functionally, Qonto’s standout is operations around teams: multi-user access with customizable permissions, expense categorization, payment tracking, and “freeze card” controls right in the app. Mercury does team cards and limits well, but Qonto feels built for permissioned banking workflows (who can initiate, who can approve, who can see). If I’m managing spend across multiple departments, that permission model is the main difference I notice.

Visible Recognition with Slack Integration
One thing Shine does well is make recognition visible without making it feel forced, and the Slack integration helped a lot because people could give kudos in the flow of work instead of having to open another platform every time

Why is Shine a good alternative to Mercury?
I like Shine for freelancers and very small teams who want a single place to handle “get paid and stay organized” without adopting a full finance stack. The integrated billing tool plus simplified accounting is enough for sending invoices and then seeing expenses categorized without exporting CSVs every week. The budgeting tools are useful when I’m setting aside money for quarterly taxes or a big software renewal, and the included bank cards keep spend tied to the same account view. If the business is still early, the pricing ladder (Basic $8/month, Premium $15/month, Business $28/month) makes it easy to justify versus paying for separate invoicing and bookkeeping add-ons. I also pay attention to the business-loan angle: having financing options presented inside the same account can matter when cash flow is lumpy and the owner doesn’t want a separate loan hunt.
What are the differences between Shine and Mercury?
Mercury’s core value to me is the startup-style banking rails: $0/month checking and savings, free ACH, and free USD international wires, plus global payments in 40+ local currencies with a clear 1% conversion fee. It also has finance-ops extras like Bill Pay with an invoice inbox and automated data extraction, and paid plans that scale invoicing (recurring invoices and an invoicing API on Plus; NetSuite categorizations and a relationship manager on Pro). Shine is more compact: a 100% online pro account paired with an integrated billing tool, simplified accounting, and budgeting tools that keep cash flow readable without setting up a separate stack. Where Mercury talks Treasury and card programs like IO, Shine leans into business loans at preferred rates and built-in financial advice. For a freelancer or micro-SMB, Shine’s packaging is the bigger functional difference.

Fast Adoption & Simple Workflow Automation
We switched to Slack from Microsoft Teams for one department and the adoption was much faster than I expected. People understood channels and reactions right away, and workflow builder has been surprisingly useful for simple request processes. It is not perfect for long-form documentation, but for day-to-day coordination it is solid
