My top 3 Sider alternatives
By Shubhashree Halder, Content Manager
Perplexity AI
If I am looking at research that will be verifiable (i.e., based upon data) rather than using an assistant as a sidebar, I typically rely on Perplexity AI as a "layer" of research. The first step is to conduct a Pro Search which provides a source-based view of the topic. Once satisfied with this view, I transition to Research queries to gain further insight, particularly if researching multiple vendors or drafting a proposal. Additionally, I appreciate that the free version of Perplexity includes 3 Pro Searches per day and 1 Research query per month allowing me to validate its value prior to committing to a paid subscription. With respect to Pro (which is $20/month), I am able to utilize enhanced models along with the ability to upload files within threads, and utilizing Comet Assistant allows me to think about this tool in terms of a agent vs. simply another chat box.
OpenAI - ChatGPT
When my work jumps between writing, screenshots, and files, I default to ChatGPT because I can keep everything in one thread: voice conversations, image generation, and file uploads + analysis on Plus ($20/month). I also use Custom GPT creation when I want a repeatable workflow (for example, a “sales call recap” GPT that always outputs the same fields). If I’m buying for a team, ChatGPT Business is priced at $25/user/month on annual billing, which is easier for me to justify than juggling per-feature add-ons.
Claude AI (Anthropic)
Claude is what I pick when the job is “long document, tight structure.” I like organizing work in Projects so the same set of docs stays attached, and then using Artifacts to turn outputs into something editable (tables, drafts, small apps) instead of just chat text. On Claude Pro, I’m paying $20 monthly (or $17/month with annual billing), and I get web search, memory across conversations, and “create files and execute code,” which is a very different feel than a browser sidebar that mainly reacts to the page I’m on.

Market & Competitor Research Made Easy
I like Perplexity AI for market research and competitor checks since the follow-up questions actually help narrow the scope instead of forcing me to rewrite the whole prompt, and the citations make it easier to hand notes to my team

Why is Perplexity AI a good alternative to Sider?
I recommend Perplexity AI when the user’s success metric is “I need sources, fast,” not “I want a helper sitting on every webpage.” If I’m a student, analyst, or PM writing a decision memo, the Pro Search + citations workflow cuts down the time I spend verifying claims, and Research Queries are a natural upgrade path when the topic turns into a multi-hour rabbit hole. I also like that I can trial the behavior on Free with defined caps (3 Pro Searches/day and 1 Research Query/month) before committing to Pro ($20/month). For orgs that care about governance, the enterprise-oriented plans add admin/security concepts (like audit logs, SCIM, and configurable data retention), which is the kind of checklist Sider-style personal assistants usually don’t prioritize.
What are the differences between Perplexity AI and Sider?
Perplexity AI feels like a search-and-citations product first, while Sider feels like a “do stuff on whatever I’m viewing” assistant. In Sider, I’m managing a credit system (e.g., Basic at $10/month includes 3,600 basic credits and 200 advanced credits) and I’m leaning on page-centric actions like YouTube Summary, AI Read Aloud, Smart web access, and its deep research feature on higher tiers (Unlimited is listed at $40/month with unlimited basic/advanced credits and Deep research). In Perplexity, the mental model is Pro Searches + Research Queries, with Free explicitly capped (3 Pro Searches/day; 1 Research Query/month). Also, for completeness, the alternatives I considered were Perplexity AI, GitHub, CustomGPT.ai, OpenAI - ChatGPT, Claude AI, You.com, Cursor AI, and Windsurf (ex. Codeium).

Why is OpenAI - ChatGPT a good alternative to Sider?
I reach for ChatGPT when I’m building a repeatable workflow around “inputs → structured outputs.” A solo founder can use Plus ($20/month) for file uploads + analysis (spreadsheets, PDFs), voice conversations for quick capture, and Custom GPT creation to standardize outputs (for example: always produce a PRD with sections, acceptance criteria, and risks). If I’m in a small ops or product team, ChatGPT Business at $25/user/month (annual billing) gives me a shared workspace and admin controls without forcing everyone onto personal accounts. This is also where ChatGPT tends to beat a browser-sidebar tool: I’m not limited to the current page; I can run an end-to-end thread that mixes images, documents, and step-by-step planning in one place.
What are the differences between OpenAI - ChatGPT and Sider?
ChatGPT is a general-purpose multimodal workspace, while Sider is a cross-platform “AI overlay” that follows me across Chrome/Edge/Safari and mobile/desktop apps. In Sider, I’m often optimizing for the cheapest action that gets the job done (basic vs advanced credits), and I use specific utilities like YouTube Summary and AI Read Aloud that are explicitly packaged into tiers (Basic $10/month; Pro $20/month; Unlimited $40/month on the pricing shown). In ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), the feature set is bundled differently: voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, Deep Research tools (availability can vary), and Custom GPT creation/use. For a company rollout, ChatGPT Business is $25/user/month billed annually and comes with a secure collaborative workspace; that’s a different buying path than Sider’s per-user credit buckets.

Why is Claude AI (Anthropic) a good alternative to Sider?
Claude fits best for knowledge work that’s document-heavy and collaborative. If I’m on a 5–150 person team, the Team plan pricing (standard seats $20/seat/month annually or $25 monthly) is straightforward, and the “shared workspace” model maps well to how I already run projects: keep the same set of docs in a Project, iterate drafts, and share the context with teammates instead of forwarding screenshots. For individual use, Pro at $20 monthly (or $17/month annually) is a clean step up when I need more usage plus Research, web search, and the ability to create files and execute code. Where it wins for me versus Sider is the “connectors + remote MCP” idea, pulling in context from tools like Slack/Google Workspace without me constantly pasting snippets into a sidebar.
What are the differences between Claude AI (Anthropic) and Sider?
Claude’s differentiation versus Sider is how it treats “ongoing work” as a first-class object. Instead of a sidebar that helps with the current tab, I use Claude Projects to keep documents and context grouped, and Artifacts to turn outputs into editable deliverables rather than just chat responses. Claude’s pricing is structured around usage tiers (Pro: $20 monthly or $17/month annually; Team standard seats: $20/seat/month annually or $25 monthly; premium seats: $100 annually or $125 monthly), not around basic/advanced credit buckets. Sider’s plans (e.g., Pro at $20/month) spell out specific web utilities like Smart web access and AI Read Aloud; Claude’s plan pages emphasize connectors (Slack + Google Workspace), web search, memory, and remote MCP connectors for pulling in tool context without manual copy/paste.

Issues + PR Links Keep Planning Clean
I mostly use GitHub for private repos and issue tracking, and it does a solid job of keeping product and engineering in sync. Being able to link commits and pull requests to issues sounds small, but it makes weekly planning a lot less messy. We also got a year of cloud credits worth about 10k through Joinsecret when we were setting things up, which helped us offset some infra costs early on.

Practical Content Controls and Source Exclusions
CustomGPT.ai made it much easier for our team to launch a customer-facing assistant without involving engineering every step. The setup was straightforward, the website embed took only a few minutes, and the analytics helped us see which questions people were asking most. I do wish the conversation styling had a bit more flexibility, but for FAQ and lead qualification it has done the job well

What I like most about You.com is that it feels useful beyond simple chat.
