My top 3 Legalstart alternatives
By Edouard Rosenblum, Co-founder @Secret
When Legalstart feels too focused on French formalities, I’d rather use SeedLegals for fundraising workflows, Clerky for Delaware C‑Corp paperwork, and Stripe Atlas for incorporation tightly linked to Stripe.
SeedLegals
If I am planning to create (or simply get "investment ready"), SeedLegals provides an investment preparation legal workflow that Legalstart does not attempt to provide; cap tables, company Board Minutes and an Investor Data Room that allows investors access to your documents. With the Access plan (£75 / month, or £590 / year) I will be able to generate and electronically sign my core investment contracts, track who owns what percentage of shares in my business, as well as organize all my filings and Board pack documents. The funding plans combine flex credits with the Access Plan at a cost when you are raising capital, thereby eliminating the need for me to purchase individual documents each time I go out to raise capital.
Clerky
For a Delaware C‑Corp that needs “clean” formation docs, I find Clerky unusually specific: bylaws, initial board consent, restricted stock purchase agreements, and pre-filled 83(b) election instructions. The Company Lifetime Package is a $819 one-time fee and includes Delaware incorporation plus the first-year registered agent fee, then I can keep using its fundraising templates (SAFEs, convertible notes) and hiring docs (offer letters + invention assignment) as needed.
Stripe Atlas
Stripe Atlas is my pick when I want incorporation and a payments runway on day one. Atlas costs $500 (plus state fees) and includes the first year of registered agent service, then renews at $100/year. It handles Delaware incorporation, EIN, founder equity issuance, and filing the 83(b) election, and it typically emails confirmation 1–2 business days after applying. I also factor in the $2,500 Stripe product credits and the fact the registered agent address isn’t meant for general mail forwarding.

Why is SeedLegals a good alternative to Legalstart?
SeedLegals is the best fit for a UK/EU founder who expects to raise money and wants the legals to behave like an operating system, not a one-off filing. If I’m juggling a pre-seed or seed process, I care about having a cap table that stays current, a data room I can share with investors, and a repeatable way to generate and e-sign the same categories of agreements (founder docs, team agreements, policies) without emailing Word files around. The Access plan (£75/month) is what I’d use to keep the “house in order,” and I’d move to a Funding plan when I want Flex credits bundled (e.g., £1,490/year to raise up to £100k). If I’m granting options, the dedicated Options plan is also clearer than trying to assemble that workflow via a France-first formation service.
What are the differences between SeedLegals and Legalstart?
Besides SeedLegals, the other Legalstart alternatives I see most often are Clerky, Contract-factory, Kandbaz, Simplitoo, Captain Contrat, doola, Harvestr, Stripe Atlas, LegalPlace, and Ownr. The big functional split is that Legalstart is built around French company formation and filings (e.g., publishing the annonce légale, submitting via the Guichet Unique, and delivering the Kbis), with packs that can start at 0€ HT for some structures and an optional jurist support subscription (after 30 days, 29,90€/month). SeedLegals isn’t trying to get you a French Kbis at all. Instead, it focuses on “startup operations” legals: an always-up-to-date cap table, board agendas/minutes, an investor data room, and structured fundraising flows via Flex credits and Funding plans (for example, Access at £75/month, or Funding Start at £1,490/year for raises up to £100k).
Clerky is the platform, made by attorneys, that will help startup founders and their lawyers complete their legal paperwork correctly and safely. Collaborate with your lawyer through the platform and let them review your paperwork to ensure you get things done right the first time.

Fundraising-Ready Docs in One Place
Clerky was especially useful during our fundraising prep because all the formation docs, IP assignment paperwork, and approvals were in one place. Investors asked for standard documents and we were able to pull them quickly without digging through old email threads

Why is Clerky a good alternative to Legalstart?
Clerky makes the most sense to me for a startup aiming at US-style fundraising, where investors and counsel expect a Delaware C‑Corp with standardized docs and a clean paper trail. If I’m a solo founder who doesn’t want to handcraft bylaws, board consents, restricted stock paperwork, and 83(b) instructions, Clerky’s formation + post-incorporation bundle saves me from missing the annoying-but-important steps. I also like it for small teams that will issue equity quickly: stock plan adoption is a defined add-on (e.g., $199), and the fundraising module supports SAFEs and convertible notes with per-issuance pricing or an unlimited-issuance subscription ($99/6 months). For non‑US founders, the fact it can submit EIN forms online (not “fax this to the IRS”) is a very practical differentiator versus a France-centric platform.
What are the differences between Clerky and Legalstart?
Legalstart’s core value is navigating French administrative steps (statuts + dossier review, publication of the legal notice, filing through the Guichet Unique/greffe flow, and getting the Kbis), with packaging like Standard/Premium for different legal forms and an add-on support subscription after the first month. Clerky is almost the opposite: it assumes you want a Delaware C‑Corporation and then generates the investor-grade paperwork that shows up in US startup due diligence. The $819 Company Lifetime Package bakes in Delaware incorporation, expedited filing fees, and the first-year Delaware registered agent fee, plus ongoing access to standard fundraising/hiring/commercial/maintenance templates. I also like how explicit the product line is: SAFEs are priced per-use (e.g., $9), convertible notes per-use (e.g., $19), and there’s an “unlimited issuances” subscription option ($99 for 6 months), which is a very different budgeting model from Legalstart’s per-procedure packs.

Delaware C-Corp Made Simple
Stripe Atlas made the Delaware C-corp setup way less intimidating than doing it piecemeal with a law firm and random state forms. The step-by-step flow was clear, and having the EIN, founder stock documents, and standard templates in one place saved me a lot of back and forth

Why is Stripe Atlas a good alternative to Legalstart?
Stripe Atlas is a strong alternative when the person incorporating is also the person who needs to start billing customers immediately. If I’m building a SaaS and I already expect to use Stripe for Payments, Atlas reduces context switching: it incorporates in Delaware, gets an EIN, issues founder equity, files the 83(b), and then nudges me into activating Stripe Payments with fields prefilled from the Atlas application. The pricing is predictable ($500 setup plus state fees; $100/year registered agent renewal), which is easier for a first-time founder than negotiating legal retainers. I also like it for international founders who want a straightforward “Delaware + Stripe” path and can separately handle basics Atlas doesn’t position as its job, like a virtual mailbox, since the registered agent address shouldn’t be used for everyday company mail.
What are the differences between Stripe Atlas and Legalstart?
Legalstart is designed for French entities and French compliance outputs (like the Kbis) and wraps the process into tiered packs, sometimes starting at 0€ HT plus mandatory legal fees, and it upsells ongoing access to jurist Q&A (29.90€/month after a 30‑day included period). Stripe Atlas is focused on US Delaware formation with a fixed setup fee and an ongoing registered agent renewal: $500 upfront (plus state fees) covering incorporation and the first registered-agent year, then $100/year afterward. Functionally, Atlas is oriented around a founder getting operational fast: it incorporates in Delaware, requests an EIN, issues founders’ equity, and files the 83(b) election; then it pushes you into the Stripe ecosystem (Atlas dashboard prefills Stripe Payments activation fields, and it includes $2,500 in Stripe product credits). One operational gotcha I always note: the registered agent address is not a general-purpose business mailing address.
