Individuals who want a secure, privacy-first email account for everyday personal use without paying anything
Your Free plan is your entry point into your secure, no commitment zone. It's an excellent choice for individuals looking to dip their feet into the world of secure email, for those seeking a secure email account for private communications, and/or don't want to have to spend money. The plan offers the standard (and necessary) end-to-end encrypted emails that Proton is known for; you'll be able to check your email on any device. Your free account comes with extremely limited storage space and a single email address. For the power user, this plan will be a very short lived experience. Think of this plan as your "email bunker", your safe place for all of the important messages that need to be communicated securely. This plan allows you to test the security features of the Proton platform, prior to fully investing into the full Proton ecosystem.
Main features
End-to-end encryption
1 user
Limited storage (up to 1 GB)
Pricing: $5 / month
Best for:
Users who rely on email daily and want more storage, custom domains, and advanced inbox features without committing to the full Proton suite
Mail Plus offers a much needed level of freedom to the individual-focused solely on email, as this is the area where you will be able to appreciate Proton Mail’s high level of security, with added space to create your professional persona. The most notable improvement is the increase in storage, allowing you to go from storing a handful of megabytes of attachments over several years to an abundant amount that allows you to store years worth of attachments. Additionally, Mail Plus provides you with the ability to use your own custom domain; a feature necessary for freelancers, side hustlers, and others who wish to establish themselves professionally via their email address. With Mail Plus, you also have unlimited folders, a substantial amount of email aliases, and access to Proton Mail Bridge for your desktop client. Mail Plus is the expert choice for those individuals who demand the ultimate in email functionality, a completely uncompromising professional presence, and the best available encryption.
Main features
Custom domains
Multiple email addresses/aliases
Proton Mail Bridge (for desktop clients)
Pricing: $13 / month
Best for:
Professionals and privacy-conscious users who want encrypted email, VPN, cloud storage, and calendar tools bundled into one all-in-one plan
Proton Unlimited is the top-tier offering of this package and in my view, represents the most bang-for-buck for users of multiple Proton products or those that require more than just secure e-mail as part of their private digital lives. The Unlimited package includes not only additional Mail Plus features, but also the complete Proton VPN product, the massive storage capability of Proton Drive, the complete Proton Calendar product and the complete Proton Pass password manager product. This provides a comprehensive suite of tools for managing an individual's digital footprint and significantly reduces the number of separate subscription-based products needed to be managed. If a user values having maximum privacy across their entire digital experience including browsing, storing files, sending/receiving e-mail, and managing credentials , then Proton Unlimited will provide their unified, all-in-one solution. It is designed for the "power user" who has no tolerance for compromise on any aspect of their online security.
Main features
All premium Proton apps (VPN, Drive, Pass)
High shared storage
Unlimited folders/labels
Pricing: $20 / month
Best for:
Couples or two-person teams who want shared access to Proton’s full privacy ecosystem while managing separate, secure accounts
The Proton Duo is a very focused plan developed to be used by couples, families, or partnerships that would like to have access to unlimited features, and the benefits of the Unlimited plan in order to be able to use them, while avoiding having to purchase two full subscriptions. The Duo is essentially the same Proton Unlimited bundle, however, it has been configured to provide two premium user accounts. Each account will offer the other user(s) their own individualized, completely functional account, which means both users will have access to the full suite of premium tools (VPN, Drive, Mail, etc.) and a combined pool of large amounts of storage. While the storage and features of this plan may have some limitations compared to purchasing two separate Unlimited plans, the savings are tremendous. If you and your partner/spouse/employee live/work together and are both equally concerned about your respective levels of privacy, then Duo provides the ideal amount of personal privacy and sharing of resources at a great price. It’s an intelligent way to create a totally secure digital environment for two people.
Main features
2 premium user accounts
Shared high storage
All premium Proton apps
Proton Mail’s Free and Mail Plus plans differ in terms of their utility and level of professionalism. The Free plan is a bare-bones version of the security provided by the Proton Mail system, with end-to-end encryption and a zero logs policy. This is great because there is no charge at all. But what the Free plan does not offer is enough flexibility to be used as a regular work tool. Storage space is limited (to up to 1GB) and you can have only one e-mail address. Organization is done via folders and labels, and this will simply not allow you to do your daily work.
Mail Plus is a more viable option for the user that uses e-mail regularly for personal and/or business purposes. First of all, the storage space is much larger (than the free plan). And the thing that we believe makes Mail Plus so valuable is the ability to set up custom domains. For example, if you were a professional, freelancer or owner of a small business you could now have an e-mail address such as me@mycompany.com. You may also have multiple e-mail aliases, and use them to have different e-mail identities (without having to have multiple accounts). Finally, Mail Plus comes with Proton Mail Bridge, a feature that allows you to continue using desktop e-mail applications (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) while still encrypting your e-mails. We highly recommend Mail Plus to those who want to keep their e-mail private while providing themselves with the productivity tools they need to complete their job.
The primary difference between Proton Mail's Unlimited plan and Duo Plan is fairly simple - the Unlimited plan is designed for one person, while the Duo plan is designed for two individuals.
Both plans provide the same suite of premium tools - Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar and Proton Pass. Both plans are based on the idea that the ultimate goal of using these tools is to have a completely private digital experience, not simply to secure your email. The Unlimited plan is best suited for the individual user who wants everything Proton offers and has a lot of data to store (typically 500 GB, however the amount of data available may vary).
If you are a couple, partner or very small team of two, we believe that Duo is the most cost-effective option. The Duo plan provides each individual with their own fully functional premium account, thus allowing each of you to have your own email address, your own encrypted calendar, and your own private VPN connection - all from one easy-to-understand bill. In addition to each person getting their own premium account, the Duo plan comes with a significantly larger shared pool of storage space - usually 2 TB - that you can distribute among the two users as you see fit. I think the ability to share storage space in this way is a huge advantage over buying two unlimited plans individually, since doing so would cost twice as much and still provide no flexibility in how the storage was used. Therefore, we always recommend the Duo plan when two people need the complete Proton Privacy Ecosystem; you will get more storage and pay less money.
The decision on what pricing plan to choose for your business is when you see the slight, yet important distinction in how Proton's consumer and business plans differ.
If your organization will have more than 1 employee, we strongly advise against the unlimited or duo personal plans. Although the personal plans provide all of Proton's secure features, they do not include the type of administration that is necessary for running a business.
For businesses, there is a clear choice of the Proton Business Plans (Proton for Business), but particularly the Proton Business Suite. This is designed to be scalable, as well as allow for administration, and provides a premium ecosystem of Mail, VPN, Drive and Pass. Most importantly, the Business Suite includes the central admin console. This single feature provides a game-changing experience as it will give an administrator the ability to quickly add or remove users, create company-wide custom domain names, enforce security policy such as 2-factor authentication (2FA) and allocate storage to users from the admin console.
Even if a one-employee business anticipates hiring employees in the near future, the best option would be to purchase a business plan. A business plan will make it easier to comply with regulations, enhance the level of security control over your data and make adding new employees a seamless process. The slightly higher cost per user of the business suite will clearly be worth the robust administration options and the increased ability to administer many users under a single secure umbrella.
When comparing alternative tools to Proton Mail, the best choice depends on whether you value privacy, ecosystem integration, business collaboration, or mass audience engagement.
The ubiquitous Gmail remains the standard for most users due to its seamless integration with Google Workspace and powerful AI-driven spam filters. It is the go-to for individuals who prioritize convenience and a generous free tier over strict end-to-end encryption.
For professional teams, the business-centric Zoho Mail provides a secure, ad-free environment with robust administrative controls. It excels as a cost-effective solution for organizations that need a professional domain and integrated office suite without the data-mining associated with larger tech giants.
If your goal is communication at scale, the marketing-heavy Mailchimp is the essential alternative. While not a traditional 1:1 email provider, it is indispensable for teams shifting from private correspondence to audience growth, offering advanced automation and analytics.
While Proton Mail leads in Swiss-based privacy, these alternatives offer different strengths—whether it’s Gmail’s accessibility, Zoho’s professional structure, or Mailchimp’s marketing power.

Yes, Proton Mail absolutely has a free plan, and in our view, this commitment to a complimentary tier is fundamental to their entire mission.
Proton Mail believes that every person on the planet should have a right to privacy , it should not be something for which you pay money. Therefore, they want to make sure that the privacy and security features that protect their paying customers are available to their free customers as well. In fact, when you sign up with Proton Mail and create an account, you will immediately be able to send and receive emails using the same state-of-the-art end-to-end and zero-access encryption used by their paying customers. We believe there is no "catch" involved; we think Proton Mail is attempting to provide people with a secure way to communicate with others , without selling them out to big tech companies that collect and sell their private information.
When you sign up for a free Proton Mail account, you also become part of the larger Proton family of tools. That means you have access to the free version of many of Proton Mail's tools, such as ProtonVPN (a Virtual Private Network), Proton Drive (cloud-based file storage), and Proton Calendar (online calendar). All these tools are accessible via your single, Proton-privacy-account login credentials. Thus, you can take advantage of Proton Mail's suite of secure communication and cloud-based services , including protecting your online browsing activity , without providing a payment method. What a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate that security and privacy can be made available to EVERYONE. The primary purpose of Proton Mail's paid accounts is to provide users with extra capacity , such as increased storage space or enhanced management capabilities , and to fund the entire platform.
The first limitation for most users will be the amount of storage space available; The amount of storage begins small and you can increase it to a maximum of 1 GB of Mail storage. For heavy users of email or those who store attachments for long periods of time, you will run out of space very quickly and once you do you will no longer receive email until you delete some mail or upgrade to a paid service.
Additionally, the free plan does not allow you to create additional email addresses beyond one, nor do you have the ability to send an excessive number of emails per day (typically 150). This makes the free plan utterly unsuitable for both business and large volumes of personal communications.
In addition to these two primary limitations, the free plan also lacks several key premium services such as support for custom domain names and Proton Mail Bridge for using the service with desktop applications. Organizational capabilities are also significantly restricted including access to only a handful of folders and labels. We believe the free plan is suitable for establishing the security of the platform and for infrequent, sensitive communications. However, we feel that if you want a clean, high volume, professional inbox - the free tier will create too many "speed bumps" in a short period of time and you should seriously consider upgrading to Mail Plus.

“I was one of those people who kept asking, 'Why pay for email?' But after seeing my Gmail data used for targeted ads one too many times, I finally decided to bite the bullet and try Mail Plus. Honestly, it's worth every penny and then some. I run a freelance design business, and the ability to use my own custom domain and have that rock-solid encryption behind it makes me look incredibly professional and secure.”
Ayaan Rowe
“Switching to Proton Unlimited was one of the best value-driven decisions I’ve made this year. I had separate subscriptions for a VPN, my password manager, and my old email host. When I sat down and did the math, combining all those premium services, Mail, Drive, Pass, and VPN, under the Unlimited plan was actually cheaper than my old fragmented setup.”
Victor Dubois
“I started with the Free plan just to test the waters, and I was so impressed with the core security that I upgraded immediately. For me, the pricing, particularly for the Unlimited plan, is justified because I’m supporting a company whose mission I genuinely believe in. They put privacy before profit, and that kind of integrity needs funding. I view my subscription not just as a cost for the service, but as an investment in a better, more private internet for everyone.”
What are the plans and pricing options available for Proton Mail?
For free, Proton provides a service called Proton Free, which has no cost. The key here is a long-term commitment to providing an email service with advanced encryption to anyone, at any time.
The next level is the individual plans, beginning with Mail Plus. Mail Plus is the first step into a professionally supported email service that increases your mail storage significantly and unlocks additional features such as custom domain support and multiple email aliases.
The third level is Proton Unlimited. Proton Unlimited is their "all-in-one" package. In Proton Unlimited, you receive the entire suite of applications including Mail, Drive, VPN, Calendar, and Pass, for one discounted price per month. To us, this represents the best value if you use two or three of these services on a regular basis.
Finally, Proton offers Proton Duo and Proton Family. Duo is the "best bang for the buck," for two premium users that wish to share a common mailbox, with the ability to increase storage. Family is similar but allows up to six users to be added to the account, with a large amount of shared storage. As well, Proton offers Proton for Business, which includes administrative tools and scalability for any type of business. It's easy to add or remove users from Proton Business accounts and their pricing structure is very flexible.
What makes Proton Mail a preferred choice for startups?
Three reasons why Proton Mail will be your first choice for start-up companies; security, integration, and control:
1. Security is #1. Most new start-ups have very important proprietary information and use a default encryption mail platform eliminates the risk of I.P. theft and also complies with Data Regulations such as GDPR from day one. Additionally, we feel that a Swiss based provider offers a tremendous competitive advantage for any company looking to secure its data, especially compared to U.S. based providers.
2. Proton Mail’s Business Suite is an amazing consolidation tool. As everyone knows, new start-ups are usually cash strapped so if they can purchase premium end-to-end encrypted Mail, Drive (Cloud Storage) Pass (Password Manager) and VPN under one per user license it greatly reduces vendor management and cost savings. Why buy four separate SaaS products when you can get all of them from one super secure provider?
3. Finally, the Admin Control Panel is what gives start-ups the ability to scale and gain control. A small team still has to manage users, manage user storage, and on-board/off-board employees quickly and efficiently. All of the Business Plans provide this central control, while the individual plans do not. In our professional opinion, a new start-up should sign up for the Proton Business Suite on Day One. This sets a great security foundation for the entire team and provides the ability to add or remove user licenses at will without having to move your core data.
What types of users benefit most from using Proton Mail?
Any user whose email content represents some form of high-risk data; financial, political, or personal. Therefore, all users who require inbox privacy as a professional necessity and not just a nice-to-have will be the ones who utilize ProtonMail the most.
Right off the bat, we can see that many of these users are journalists & activists who use un-logged communication as a means of protecting their sources & their own safety. Because of the end-to-end encryption, if someone were to access a ProtonMail user's account, the encrypted emails would still remain unreadable. Additionally, legal professionals, medical professionals, etc., who have access to highly sensitive client information (HIPAA or lawyer-client privilege, etc.) find the Swiss-based privacy laws & zero-access encryption to be completely necessary for regulatory compliance.
While those aforementioned users represent high-risk users, the growing number of privacy-conscious individuals and small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) who are tired of being monetized by big tech platforms also represent large segments of Proton Mail's user base. We've seen significant growth in industries such as finance & tech consultancies utilizing the Proton Business Suite. For example, Proton states that they secure over 100,000 businesses globally, including growing start-ups & non-profit organizations like Open Briefing. Based on our expert opinion, any organization with a threat model (any organization who needs to ensure that their data will not be scanned or easily handed over) should be utilizing Proton Mail.
Does Proton Mail justify its pricing with the features it offers?
What differentiates Proton Mail from other “free” Big Tech offerings is that when you pay for Proton Mail you are purchasing an anti-surveillance business model. They do not scan your emails to sell ads. This business model is ethically superior to that of their free competitors and alone makes the cost worthwhile for some people because this service is aligned with your interests and not those of advertisers’.
When you evaluate the Proton Unlimited plan, the value equation becomes even stronger. You are receiving a high-quality, premium, end-to-end encrypted VPN, a secure cloud storage solution (Proton Drive), a password manager (Proton Pass) and an enhanced version of the Mail Service all within one package. If you were to purchase the best-in-class privacy focused versions of each of these services individually, we believe the total monthly cost would almost definitely be greater than the price of the Unlimited bundle.
The price for what you receive is very competitive. When you invest in Proton Mail you are investing in a consolidated, end-to-end encrypted digital life protected by the strong Swiss privacy laws. Therefore, for users that require the level of guaranteed security and simplicity offered by Proton Mail, the price is not only fair but it is also a required investment.
What Proton Mail subscription tier is most popular?
Proton Unlimited is, without question, the paid subscription tier that is the most widely subscribed to by all users with full integration into the entire Proton ecosystem. While the Proton Free tier is technically the most subscribed to due to its role as an entry point to simple security, Unlimited stands out above the rest as the best-valued flagship bundle of paid subscriptions. In fact, Unlimited represents the "no-brainer" option for a total privacy-focused experience for a power-user.
Why? Unlimited provides a way to stop purchasing simple emails, and purchase a complete digital privacy suite. When using Unlimited, you receive the same Mail Plus features you would receive from purchasing each feature individually; you will also have the ability to use your own custom domain, additional aliases beyond those allowed on the free version, and most importantly, you will be able to unlock the premium versions of Proton VPN, Proton Drive (with large amounts of storage) and Proton Pass. The consolidation of these four critical tools into one single subscription makes it the ultimate choice for most premium users. Many users are tired of having multiple separate billing accounts for their VPN, their cloud storage and their secure email. With the Unlimited plan, you can consolidate your security and maximize your dollar by having four critical privacy tools in one package. As such, it is the most frequently discussed and recommended option by the privacy community as the most comprehensive option available.
How can organizations unlock the full value of their Proton Mail subscription?
Unlocking the full value of your Proton Mail subscription, especially for organizations, goes far beyond just using the secure email service; it’s about strategic financial planning and feature adoption across the entire ecosystem. Here's how companies can maximize their return on investment (ROI):
What Proton products are included in Proton Mail’s pricing plans?
The inclusion of other Proton products varies heavily depending on the subscription level, but here’s a breakdown of what you get access to:
Essentially, once you move to the Unlimited tier, you're not just paying for Mail; you're subscribing to a unified, top-tier privacy solution covering email, files, passwords, and internet access, all under one account. We think that bundling is truly where the value of the platform lies.
