01 Is TrainPal any Good? My expert Review
For approximately six months now, I have used Trainpal to make train bookings in the U.K., and I can honestly state that it has dramatically changed the way I go about making those bookings. Due to commuting from Manchester to London two times a month for client meetings, I had grown tired of the confusion surrounding fare structure on other booking platforms.
Trainpal really stood out in the way that it automatically broke down my ticket purchases into cheaper combinations. In one instance last month, I saved £47 on a single trip from Manchester to London by purchasing tickets from Manchester to Stockport and then Stockport to London as opposed to a direct ticket. Once again, the application took care of everything with no need to switch trains. The interface of the application is extremely easy to use which is very important considering the fact that you will most likely be booking your tickets quickly while en route to or returning from a meeting.
That being said, there are a few areas where I feel that Trainpal could improve upon. During busy hours (i.e. rush hour), I have found that the customer service response time is slower than desired, and I have had to wait nearly 48 hours to receive an answer to a refund inquiry that I submitted. Additionally, while I do believe that the savings that I am able to achieve through using Trainpal are real, they are not necessarily dramatic for short trips. For example, when I take day trips to Birmingham, I tend to only save anywhere from £3 to £5 compared to what I would have paid if I had booked directly through the rail company's website.
Despite these small downsides, Trainpal has become my first choice for booking train tickets. While the savings may not seem like a lot per individual trip, they definitely add up after a period of time, and the overall user experience of Trainpal is far superior to traditional rail booking sites.
