My top 3 Illustrator alternatives
By Mary O'Brien, Customer Success Manager
Figma
Figma is another excellent alternative to Illustrator. It's a cloud-based design tool that enables multiple users to collaborate on a project simultaneously. This makes it perfect for team projects. For example, if you're designing a website or an app, you can use Figma to create interactive prototypes and share them with your team for feedback. It's also great for creating vector graphics and icons.
Photoshop
Photoshop is more than just a photo editing tool. It's also great for creating digital art, website mockups, 3D artwork, and more. For example, if you're a digital artist, you can use Photoshop to create stunning illustrations and artworks. You can also use it to design website layouts and edit photos for your blog or website.
Canva
Canva is a good tool for creating visuals like social media graphics, presentations, posters, and more. It's easy to use, with tons of templates that you can customize to fit your needs. If you're working on a social media campaign, Canva's drag-and-drop feature makes it simple to create eye-catching posts. Plus, it has handy real-time collaboration tools so your team can easily work together.
While Canva doesn't offer the advanced design features or precise control you'd find in professional software like Adobe Illustrator, it's an excellent alternative for everyday design tasks—especially if you're looking for something quick, intuitive, and beginner-friendly.
List of Alternatives to Illustrator
Here are some of Illustrator's top competitors in the Design category: Figma, Photoshop, Moqups or Proto.io.
Figma brings value by providing a collaborative design tool that allows teams to create, prototype, and iterate on designs in real-time. With its cloud-based platform, Figma enables seamless collaboration, eliminating the need for multiple file versions and facilitating efficient communication across team members. Its intuitive interface and powerful design features empower designers to bring their visions to life while saving time and streamlining the design process.

Why is Figma a good alternative to Illustrator?
I find Adobe Illustrator to be a great alternative to Figma because it offers an extensive range of tools and features that can enhance the design process. Illustrator is known for its superior vector graphics editing capabilities, which are incredibly useful when creating logos, icons, typography, or other elements that require scalability. This means you can resize your designs without losing any quality.
Illustrator also allows offline work, making it more flexible in situations where internet access is limited. In addition, it has excellent integration with other Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop and InDesign, which can significantly streamline workflows for multidisciplinary projects. While Figma shines in real-time collaboration, Illustrator's robust features make it a powerful tool for individual designers or teams that prioritize detailed design work.
What are the differences between Figma and Illustrator?
I have found that both Illustrator and Figma are powerful design tools, but they serve different purposes. Illustrator, a product of Adobe, is a vector graphics editor which is primarily used for creating logos, illustrations, and graphic designs. It's more suitable for print media and has a steep learning curve due to its extensive features.
On the other hand, Figma is a cloud-based design tool that focuses on UI/UX design. It allows real-time collaboration, making it an ideal choice for team projects. It's more user-friendly and accessible from any device with an internet connection. However, it's not as feature-rich as Illustrator when it comes to advanced graphic design.
In summary, while Illustrator excels in complex graphic designs and print media, Figma shines in collaborative UI/UX design work.

Why is Photoshop a good alternative to Illustrator?
I find Illustrator to be a great alternative to Photoshop due to its vector-based nature. Unlike Photoshop, which is raster-based and can lose quality when scaling, Illustrator maintains the quality of graphics regardless of how much they are resized. This makes it perfect for designing logos, icons, and other graphics that may need to be scaled up or down.
Illustrator also excels in typography control. It offers more precise text manipulation tools, making it ideal for creating stunning typographic designs. Moreover, its artboard feature allows me to work on multiple designs within the same workspace - a feature that’s particularly useful for designing sets of graphics.
While Photoshop is excellent for photo editing and manipulation, Illustrator's capabilities make it a superior choice for graphic design and illustration. Both have their strengths and are best used in tandem.
What are the differences between Photoshop and Illustrator?
I have often found myself using both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for different projects. The main difference between the two lies in their primary usage and the type of images they produce. Illustrator, being a vector-based software, is perfect for creating logos and graphics that can be scaled to any size without losing quality. It's ideal for designing layouts, typography, and vector animations.
In contrast, Photoshop is a raster-based program, meaning it works best with pixels and is primarily used for photo editing and creating digital paintings. It allows me to work with layers, apply filters, and make detailed adjustments to colors and textures. While both programs can accomplish similar tasks, they each have their strengths: Illustrator for crisp graphic design and scalability, Photoshop for detailed image manipulation.

Moqups: Streamlining Freelancer-Client Collaboration
As a freelancer, I found Moqups indispensable for communicating with clients. The ability to share and comment on designs made collaboration smooth and efficient

Why is Moqups a good alternative to Illustrator?
I believe Illustrator is a good alternative to Moqups due to its extensive features and flexibility. Unlike Moqups, which is primarily a wireframing and prototyping tool, Illustrator is a full-fledged graphic design software that allows you to create everything from simple icons to complex illustrations. It offers a wide range of tools and options for creating vector graphics, which are scalable without losing quality. This makes it ideal for designing logos, infographics, and other graphics that need to be resized frequently.
Furthermore, Illustrator supports layering and has a more robust text editing feature compared to Moqups. It also integrates seamlessly with other Adobe products like Photoshop and InDesign, making it a more versatile tool for designers who work on diverse projects. While Moqups is great for quick mockups and prototypes, Illustrator provides more depth and control for detailed design work.
What are the differences between Moqups and Illustrator?
I use both Illustrator and Moqups, and I've noticed several key differences between the two. Illustrator, developed by Adobe, is a vector graphics editor that allows for the creation and editing of digital images. It's a versatile tool used by graphic designers to create logos, illustrations, typography, and complex illustrations for print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.
On the other hand, Moqups is an online platform designed specifically for creating wireframes, mockups, diagrams, and prototypes. It's more focused on user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design. While Illustrator has a broader range of capabilities, Moqups is more streamlined and user-friendly for specific tasks like creating website or app layouts.
In summary, while both tools have their strengths, Illustrator is more suitable for detailed graphic design work, whereas Moqups is better suited for UI/UX design tasks.

Why is InDesign a good alternative to Illustrator?
As a graphic designer, I find InDesign to be a great alternative to Illustrator. While both are products of Adobe and can be used for graphic design, they serve different purposes. Illustrator is primarily used for creating and editing vector-based drawings such as logos and graphics. On the other hand, InDesign is built specifically for layout design projects like magazines, brochures, posters, and eBooks. Its tools allow for easy manipulation of text and images within a predefined layout. It also supports multi-page projects, which is not an option in Illustrator. Additionally, InDesign offers better typesetting capabilities which makes it ideal for working with large amounts of text. So, if you're working on a project that requires detailed layout design or involves extensive text manipulation, InDesign might be the better choice over Illustrator.
What are the differences between InDesign and Illustrator?
I often find myself working with both Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, two powerful design tools with distinct features. While they may seem similar, there are key differences that distinguish them. Primarily, InDesign is a desktop publishing software best suited for creating multi-page documents like books, magazines, brochures and reports. It excels in text formatting, layout design and prepress tasks.
Alternatively, Illustrator is a vector-based drawing tool designed for creating and editing graphics. It's ideal for designing logos, icons, sketches, typography and complex illustrations for any medium. Unlike InDesign, Illustrator doesn't handle multi-page layouts as efficiently but it offers more flexibility in terms of graphic creation and manipulation.
In summary, while there is some overlap in their functionalities, InDesign is more specialized in layout design and text handling whereas Illustrator shines in creating and editing vector-based graphics.
