If I’m replacing Retool, I look for a fast UI builder, solid governance, and real automations; Jet Admin, AppSheet, and Airtable cover those angles best.
Jet Admin
I utilize Jet Admin as my "internal console" to pull data from multiple systems and have all of this work completed without building a full front end. I'll pull Postgres data for most core information, I will then pull Stripe or Zendesk data and sync both of these systems through Jet's 360 Data Syncing with Rollup/Lookup Join. The UI is created using the Table and Kanban Blocks for ticket triage queues, then I use the Map Block to show locations based on tickets. I like the fact that the Query Builder allows me to combine SQL Queries with HTTP/API requests and provide those results back to Computed Columns (Formula or JavaScript) when there are complicated queries. As far as tracking changes in production, I create separate prod/stage/dev environments, version control and activity logs so they track all of the changes made.
AppSheet
I reach for AppSheet when the app must run on phones and tolerate offline gaps. Plans are per user: Starter ($5), Core ($10), Enterprise Plus ($20) monthly. Starter/Core connect to spreadsheets and cloud file storage (including AppSheet Database), while Enterprise Plus adds connectors for cloud databases, APIs, SaaS services, and enterprise data services, plus machine-learning modeling and governance controls aimed at larger orgs.
Airtable
I pick Airtable when the base is the source of truth and I need lightweight apps on top of it. Interface Designer builds drag-and-drop pages over existing tables, and interface permissions help me share only the pages a team needs. Automations handle multi-step trigger/action flows, can be extended with JavaScript, and can be triggered externally with an incoming webhook. Airtable charges per seat, and read-only collaborators don’t add cost.

I can build a refund console that reads charges from Stripe, tickets from Zendesk, and customer rows from Postgres, then join them with Rollup/Lookup and surface the result in a single Table view. When I need auditability, the activity log that tracks every query and built-in version control help me explain exactly what changed between releases. For organizations with identity requirements, SSO options (SAML/Okta) and granular permissions map cleanly to department-level access. If design matters, I like having a Component Designer, Figma import, themes, custom domains, and even whitelabeling, so the internal tool doesn’t look like a prototype.

A Paper Plane for Your Digital Journey with AppSheet
I believe that tools like AppSheet should be utilized even without extensive training in the field, as they can yield excellent results. I had a positive experience using it in a tourism project with a systems-focused partner. It simplified our job during the mobile app development. Even for non-programmers, it's user-friendly as it's based on "Excel" spreadsheets and has a straightforward data structure. Features that impressed us include its ability to establish small workflows, GPS and maps support, and the option to activate notifications. It can also be accessed offline. Another notable feature is its storage capabilities - it supports any Cloud provider, which I think adds significant value. I don't see any downsides to it. I believe it's a tool that offers opportunities for professionals from non-technical fields.

Why is AppSheet a good alternative to Retool?
AppSheet fits best when the internal tool is really a workflow app for many end users, warehouse pickers, inspectors, or a sales team updating records from a phone. I like that I can prototype with up to 10 test users at no cost, then license the deployed app per user on Starter ($5) or Core ($10). If your data already lives in Google Sheets or Drive, Starter/Core’s spreadsheet and file-storage connectors keep the setup simple, and AppSheet Database can hold app tables without standing up Postgres. When you outgrow that, Enterprise Plus ($20) is the clear upgrade point because it adds connectors for cloud databases, APIs, SaaS services, and enterprise data services, plus enhanced security/governance controls and machine-learning modeling. In practice, that’s the tier I’d target for regulated orgs that need centralized admin control.
What are the differences between AppSheet and Retool?
Retool assumes you’re assembling an internal tool UI around databases/APIs, and it meters automation via workflow runs (500/month on Free, 5,000/month on Team/Business, then paid overages). For lightweight integrations, Automations cover the basics (multi-step trigger/action logic), and the incoming-webhook trigger gives me a unique URL when another system needs to signal Airtable. Bubble let me get an internal client portal live without hiring a full dev team. The visual editor is flexible once you understand reusable elements and custom states, and the workflow builder handles a lot more logic than I expected. It can get messy if you do not stay organized, but for shipping fast it has been worth it

The software is user-friendly, has a strong back end, and a well-designed user interface. The overall user experience is excellent. It also operates in offline mode, which is a significant advantage due to areas of slow internet across the country. The product roadmap is extensive. However, it's still developing and currently does not support SCORM. The desktop display of mobile content could be better.
