My top 3 Zapier alternatives
By Shubhashree Halder, Content Manager
Make
I usually use make to give my workflows as much real branching capability as possible. Dragging a new Scenario onto the canvas and splitting it into separate routes using routers will feel much more explicit than creating a series of steps in Zapier. Most often I’m building: Shopify “Paid Order Created” -> route based on tags -> Create or update Hubspot contact -> Post a slack message -> Write a single row to google sheets and have an error handling mechanism that will retry only the route which failed. The http module is also really useful for calling any rest endpoint if there isn’t an application connector available.
n8n
With n8n, I’m usually optimizing for control: I can self-host it (Docker makes this straightforward), keep credentials in my own environment, and drop into a Code node when a transformation is easier in JavaScript than in a UI mapper. For example, I’ll accept a Webhook trigger, normalize payload fields with expressions, then call a Postgres node and send a Slack notification only if a query returns rows.
Workato
Workato is where I land when an ops or IT team needs governance, not just zaps. Recipes can be shared as standardized building blocks, and I can lock down who can edit connectors with role-based access controls. In practice, I’ve seen it used for Salesforce to NetSuite syncs, with environment separation (dev/test/prod) and audit trails that make change reviews possible.
List of Alternatives to Zapier
Here are some of Zapier's top competitors in the Business Process Management category: Make, n8n, Workato or Cobalt.

It's an amazing product and helped a lot to automate the workflows of my startup. Due the fact that I live in Brazil, the prices are high and it's not that use for people who doesnt know well the goals that want to achieve.

Why is Make a good alternative to Zapier?
Make is a practical Zapier alternative for builders who already understand their process and want to model it explicitly. If you’re a growth marketer stitching together Shopify, HubSpot, and Google Sheets, the visual canvas makes it obvious where data splits, loops, and merges. I like being able to add an error handler on a specific route, so a failed Slack post doesn’t block the CRM update. It also fits product teams that need one-off integrations quickly, because the HTTP module plus custom headers/body mapping lets you hit internal endpoints without writing a full service. If your workflows are sensitive to cost, Make can work well because you can design scenarios to reduce operations (batching, filtering early) instead of paying for every downstream step the way many Zapier Zaps end up doing.

We started on a trial and then found a 14-day access plus 17% off the yearly option through Joinsecret, which made it easier to justify. Price aside, the part I value is that workflows do not feel boxed in, especially when you need custom code next to standard integrations

Why is n8n a good alternative to Zapier?
n8n is the alternative I point to when the bottleneck isn’t can I connect two apps, but where does my data live, and who controls execution. A solo developer or small ops team can self-host n8n alongside Postgres/Redis, wire it into private services, and avoid pushing customer payloads through a third-party automation cloud. It’s also a good fit for API-heavy companies because nodes can call REST endpoints directly, and the Code node is a pressure valve for anything messy, HMAC verification, custom retry logic, or transforming webhook payloads into normalized tables. The flip side is that n8n rewards people who are comfortable with infrastructure basics: secrets management, upgrades, and monitoring matter once workflows become business-critical.
What are the differences between n8n and Zapier?
n8n feels less like a marketplace of prebuilt integrations and more like an automation runtime I can own. Instead of relying on a hosted SaaS to store every payload, I can run n8n on my own server, point it at internal services over a private network, and keep logs and execution data under my retention policies. Workflow steps are nodes, and the Code node lets me write JavaScript for edge cases like signature verification, custom pagination, or reshaping deeply nested JSON. Zapier is still the smoother choice when I need a managed connector with OAuth already handled and a huge catalog of apps. With n8n, I’m trading that convenience for self-hosting overhead (updates, backups, scaling) and occasionally building the last-mile API call myself.

Huge time savings with prebuilt connectors
What impressed me most was how quickly we connected our stack. Instead of building custom integrations, we used existing connectors for HubSpot, Stripe, and Zendesk. Within a few days, customer lifecycle workflows were fully automated. It saved weeks of engineering time and ongoing maintenance.

Why is Workato a good alternative to Zapier?
Workato is a good Zapier replacement when you’re operating at integration-program scale: multiple teams, shared connectors, and workflows that need approvals. I’ve seen it shine in RevOps and finance automation where Salesforce objects have to map cleanly into NetSuite records and every change needs an audit trail. IT teams benefit from role-based access controls and environment separation, so recipe edits can be tested before production. If you have on-prem systems (a legacy SQL Server, a private ERP, or internal SOAP services), Workato’s agent-based connectivity is a practical way to bridge them without punching wide holes in your network. For an early-stage startup, the same strengths can be overkill, if you don’t need governance, Zapier or Make usually gets to working faster.
What are the differences between Workato and Zapier?
Workato competes with Zapier from the opposite end of the org chart. Where I’d use Zapier for a team’s quick automations, Workato is built for company-wide integrations with governance: role-based permissions, centralized connector management, and audit logs that are usable during compliance reviews. Its recipes support reusable steps, variables, and more structured error handling, which matters when you’re synchronizing systems like Salesforce, NetSuite, or ServiceNow. Workato also supports hybrid connectivity patterns (cloud apps plus on-prem systems) via agents, which is hard to replicate with a purely SaaS-first Zapier setup. The downside is procurement: Workato is typically sold on a quote-based, enterprise contract, so it’s rarely the lightweight, swipe-a-card decision that Zapier often is.

Finally a serious alternative to custom LLM backends
I have built LLM features from scratch before, and it is always the same pain: prompt versions, logging, retries, monitoring. Dify gave us a proper backend out of the box. We used it to power an AI feature inside our SaaS app via API, without exposing anything to end users. It felt much closer to real software engineering than most no-code AI tools.
