Braze
When I am looking for a way to get engaged through my products as they are happening in real time, I use Braze Canvas to create an actual experience of engaging across multiple channels. I will begin creating an onboarding Canvas based on "account_created", then use in-app behavior to make decisions on which path to take, and finally add exit conditions so once those accounts have been fully converted, no further nurturing is done. In terms of commerce, I prefer using email templates along side Catalogs when I want to be able to include individualized data (i.e. SKU numbers, available inventory levels, etc.) to enhance relevance of the messages being sent out without having to recreate all new campaigns each week. If I am launching new features and corresponding messaging, I like to leverage Feature Flags to control who sees the feature at what time, while also evaluating the effectiveness of the messaging within the same engagement stack.
ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign is the option I like when I want fast iteration on email-first automations, then I selectively add channels. The automation section is unusually prescriptive: it explicitly calls out 950+ automation recipes, an automations map, and A/B testing at the email + automation level. I also find the “SMS Add-on” clear about what you actually get (opt-in/consent tooling, 2-way inbox, and reply-triggered automations), which is the difference between “we send texts” and “we run SMS programs.”
HubSpot
HubSpot is where I land when marketing automation has to live inside a CRM, not next to it. The marketing-contacts model is concrete: Starter at $50/month with 1,000 included contacts, Professional at $890/month with 2,000, Enterprise at $3,600/month with 10,000. If I’m running full-funnel reporting, I’d rather have lifecycle stage, deals, and campaign touchpoints in one database, even if it means accepting HubSpot’s contact-tier mechanics instead of a pure event-driven messaging tool.
