My top 2 Square Point of Sale alternatives
By Frédéric Laffont, Chief Technology Officer
I've been looking into similar software to Square Point of Sale and have found three that stand out: Stripe, Shopify, and PayPal.
Stripe
Stripe is a great payment processor for online merchants of different types and sizes. Stripe has options like recurring billing, mobile payments, and different customer checkout options. If you have a subscription business, you can bill customers automatically every month. If you are building a mobile application, you can use Stripe to accept payments within the application.
If you currently use Square's POS system and are considering switching to another solution, Stripe is a good alternative place, especially if you are looking for something more flexible for online payments and integrations. Square is great at handling physical transactions and retail space; however, Stripe can be very helpful for online sales, subscriptions, and app integrations.
Shopify
Shopify is another excellent alternative to Square Point of Sale. It's an all-in-one ecommerce platform that allows businesses to sell products online, on social media, or in person. For instance, a small business owner can use Shopify to set up an online store and manage inventory, payments, and shipping all from one place. Plus, with Shopify's Point of Sale system, they can also accept payments in person at a physical store or pop-up shop.

Strong International Payments & Tax Support
What I like most is how well Stripe handles international payments, especially local payment methods and tax support, since we started selling in Europe and didn’t have to bolt on a separate tool just to stay organized

Why is Stripe a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
As a business owner, I find Square Point of Sale an excellent alternative to Stripe. Square offers a comprehensive solution for businesses, not just online but also in physical stores. Unlike Stripe, which is more focused on online payments, Square provides hardware options like card readers and registers that make in-person transactions seamless. Additionally, Square's pricing structure is straightforward with a flat rate per transaction. This transparency makes it easier for me to manage my finances without worrying about hidden fees. The user interface is also intuitive and easy to use, making the daily operations smooth. Moreover, Square comes with built-in features such as inventory management, customer directories, and detailed sales reports that provide valuable insights for my business growth.

Practical Day-to-Day Order and Discount Management
For a small brand with a lean team, Shopify has been practical. The order management view is clear, returns are manageable with the right app, and the discount code system is flexible enough for campaigns. I would like a few more advanced features included natively, but overall it is easy to run day to day

Why is Shopify a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I find Square Point of Sale an excellent alternative to Shopify for several reasons. Firstly, Square offers a simple and straightforward pricing structure. Unlike Shopify, which has different pricing tiers, Square has a single flat-rate transaction fee. This makes it easier for businesses to predict their costs. Secondly, Square's offline mode ensures that sales can continue even without internet access, a feature not available on Shopify. Additionally, Square provides a free online store and does not charge extra for features like inventory management and sales reports. Lastly, its user-friendly interface makes it easy to set up and manage your business. Therefore, Square Point of Sale proves to be more cost-effective and reliable compared to Shopify.

An Unexpected Venmo Adventure: Selling My Cricut Machine
On a bright Thursday morning, I decided to sell my Cricut machine and soon enough, a buyer reached out to me. I suggested payment through Venmo, which she promptly sent. To my surprise, Venmo started engaging me in an unexpected way. They initially requested $2, then $3, and finally $5. It was an intriguing experience, like a thrilling roller coaster ride with no end in sight. It was certainly a unique interaction that kept me on my toes!
October 19, 2024
Why is Venmo a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I find Venmo to be a great alternative to Square Point of Sale due to its simplicity and user-friendly interface. Unlike Square, which is primarily designed for businesses, Venmo is ideal for personal transactions between friends or family. It's free to send money using your Venmo balance, bank account, debit card, or prepaid card which makes it highly convenient. Moreover, the social aspect of Venmo where you can share and view payment descriptions on your feed adds an element of fun and transparency to transactions. The ability to split bills or expenses with multiple people is another standout feature that makes Venmo more suitable for personal use. In essence, if you're looking for an easy way to manage personal transactions rather than business ones, Venmo is the way to go.
What are the differences between Venmo and Square Point of Sale?
As someone who has used both Venmo and Square Point of Sale (POS), I've noticed several key differences. Venmo is primarily a peer-to-peer payment platform, designed for sending and receiving money between friends and family. It's not intended for business transactions, although some small businesses do use it informally.
Square POS, on the other hand, is a full-fledged business solution. It allows businesses to accept payments in person or online, track inventory, generate sales reports, and more. While Square does have a peer-to-peer app called Cash App, their POS system is much more robust and aimed at businesses.
In terms of fees, Venmo doesn't charge for personal transactions, but there's a fee for receiving business payments. Square POS charges businesses a flat rate per transaction. Both platforms require an internet connection to operate.

Why is Vagaro a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I find Vagaro to be a great alternative to Square Point of Sale. It's not just a POS system, but also a comprehensive salon, spa, and fitness business management software. This means it provides more industry-specific features such as appointment scheduling, automated reminders, and online bookings that Square doesn't offer. Vagaro's pricing is also more flexible with a sliding scale based on the number of users, making it a cost-effective choice for smaller businesses.
Moreover, Vagaro excels in customer relationship management with its built-in marketing tools. It allows businesses to send promotional emails, sell gift cards, and even run loyalty programs. On top of that, it offers a branded app for businesses allowing customers to book appointments directly. This level of customization gives businesses an edge in enhancing the customer experience and boosting their brand image.
What are the differences between Vagaro and Square Point of Sale?
I have noticed several key differences between Vagaroo and Square Point of Sale. Firstly, Vagaroo is specifically designed for service-based businesses like salons, spas, and fitness studios, offering features such as appointment scheduling, reminders, and online booking. Alternatively, Square Point of Sale is more versatile and can be used by any type of business, including retail stores and restaurants. It offers inventory management, customer directories, and receipt printing.
Another difference lies in their payment processing. While both offer card processing services, Square Point of Sale also supports mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Lastly, in terms of pricing, Vagaroo has a monthly subscription fee with different plans to choose from based on business size and needs. Conversely, Square Point of Sale operates on a pay-per-use model with no monthly fees but charges a flat rate for each transaction.

Weebly: A Satisfactory Yet Underwhelming Website Builder
My overall experience with Weebly has been satisfactory, but slightly disappointing. Compared to other website builders like Squarespace, it seems less modern and stylish. I'm uncertain if I'll continue using Weebly or switch to another platform soon. I managed to create my website as desired, selecting a template and replacing everything with my own photos and videos. However, the website felt clunky and occasionally unresponsive. There were instances when the preview didn't accurately reflect the actual website, and it would sometimes freeze. I would have to exit and re-enter, hoping my changes were saved. Sometimes they were, sometimes they weren't. I initially chose Weebly because my wife already had a website with them.

Excellent for Contract Management and Streamlined Invoicing
I use HoneyBook for its valuable contracts and simplified invoicing. I like the auto-billing and recurring billing features, but I'm not satisfied with the high transaction fees. I've noticed that competitors offer faster deposits. Despite the addition of many new features to the software, I've had difficulty learning the initial project features to utilize the new smartfile features. Hiring a professional to assist is too costly. The invoicing platform is user-friendly and the CRM helps me manage contacts and specifics. The contract templates meet my needs perfectly. However, payments take longer to deposit compared to other platforms. The pipeline and smart file features are complicated and even after two years, I'm still not using them. My clients also don't appreciate the notifications on every change within their project. I initially chose HoneyBook thinking I could use the project management platform, but it wasn't up to par so I switched to BaseCamp instead. I often use Square for invoicing because the fees are lower.

Why is HoneyBook a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I find HoneyBook to be a great alternative to Square Point of Sale because it offers more than just payment processing. It's an all-in-one business management platform that can handle invoicing, contracts, scheduling, and client communication in one place. This saves me a lot of time and effort as I don't have to switch between different apps or platforms for different tasks.
Moreover, HoneyBook has a user-friendly interface which makes it easy to navigate and use. It also offers a personalized experience by allowing me to customize my invoices and other documents with my brand colors and logo. Furthermore, its automation features help streamline my workflow by automating repetitive tasks such as sending follow-up emails or reminders. Lastly, HoneyBook's customer support is exceptional - they are quick to respond and very helpful.
What are the differences between HoneyBook and Square Point of Sale?
I have found that Honeybook and Square Point of Sale are quite different in their functionality and purpose. Honeybook is primarily a business management tool, designed to help freelancers and small businesses manage their clients, projects, contracts, and payments in one place. It offers features such as automated workflows, scheduling, invoicing, and payment processing.
On the other hand, Square Point of Sale is a mobile POS system designed for businesses to conduct sales transactions. It offers features like inventory management, customer directory, digital receipts, offline mode, and more. While both provide payment processing options, Square POS is more focused on facilitating transactions at the point of sale whereas Honeybook provides a more comprehensive set of tools for managing all aspects of a business.

Why is Cash App a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I find the service Cash App to be a good alternative to Square Point of Sale for several reasons. Firstly, it offers a more simplified and user-friendly interface which makes it easier and quicker for users to carry out transactions. Secondly, Cash App does not require additional hardware like a card reader, making it more convenient for businesses with limited resources. Furthermore, it has no monthly fees, unlike Square Point of Sale that has varying processing fees. Lastly, Cash App allows peer-to-peer transactions. This feature is very useful for small businesses or individuals who often transact with their peers. Overall, Cash App provides an efficient, cost-effective and user-friendly solution for managing transactions.
What are the differences between Cash App and Square Point of Sale?
As a user, I have noticed several differences between Cash App and Square Point of Sale. Firstly, Cash App is a mobile payment service that allows users to transfer money to one another using a mobile app. It is primarily used for personal transactions between friends and family. On the other hand, Square Point of Sale is a mobile POS system for businesses that enables them to accept payments from customers. It includes features such as inventory management, customer directories, and sales reports.
Secondly, Cash App has a feature that allows users to invest in stocks or bitcoin, which isn't available in Square Point of Sale. Conversely, Square Point of Sale offers more advanced business-related features, like the ability to print receipts and integrate with other business software, which are not available in Cash App.

Efficient Operations and Unbeatable Value: A Gofrugal Review
this has helped keep my operations running smoothly. Lastly, the value for money that Gofrugal offers is unmatched
October 21, 2024
Why is Gofrugal a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I believe Gofrugal is a good alternative to Square Point of Sale due to various reasons. First, Gofrugal offers comprehensive retail management solutions, not just point-of-sale systems. It integrates all aspects of business such as inventory management, customer relationship management, financials, and e-commerce. This holistic approach can help businesses streamline their operations and increase efficiency. Second, Gofrugal offers more customization options compared to Square. Businesses can tailor the software to their specific needs, which can result in a more effective system. Third, Gofrugal has robust customer support with 24/7 availability. This can be crucial for businesses that need immediate assistance or troubleshooting. Lastly, Gofrugal offers a wider range of features including digital payments, online ordering, and supply chain management that are not available in Square Point of Sale.
What are the differences between Gofrugal and Square Point of Sale?
As a user, I find significant differences between the GoFrugal and Square Point of Sale software. GoFrugal is a comprehensive retail, distribution, and restaurant management solution that offers a wide range of features such as inventory management, CRM, POS, e-commerce integration, and analytics. It's ideal for small to large businesses looking for an all-in-one solution.
On the other hand, Square Point of Sale is more focused on providing a simple and efficient point-of-sale solution. It offers features like sales reports, inventory tracking, customer directories, and digital receipts. However, it doesn't offer as broad a range of functionality as GoFrugal. Square is more suited to small businesses or individuals who need a straightforward, easy-to-use POS system.
In terms of pricing, Square offers a free version with optional add-ons while GoFrugal has different pricing tiers based on the size and needs of the business.

Efficient and User-Friendly Mobile App for Convenient Transaction Management
Lastly, the mobile app is very convenient for managing transactions on the go, it's user-friendly and efficient.
October 20, 2024
Why is Authorize.net a good alternative to Square Point of Sale?
I believe Authorize.net is a great alternative to Square Point of Sale because of its versatility and powerful features. Unlike Square, Authorize.net is compatible with more than 450 software platforms. This makes it easier to integrate and use it with existing business systems. It also offers advanced fraud detection services to ensure transactions are secure and trustworthy. In terms of pricing, while Square charges for individual transactions, Authorize.net provides a monthly payment option which can be more cost-effective for businesses with high sales volume. Moreover, it offers a virtual terminal feature which allows you to manually enter credit card information, making it ideal for phone and mail orders. Overall, Authorize.net provides a robust and flexible solution that can cater to various business needs.
What are the differences between Authorize.net and Square Point of Sale?
I believe there are several distinct differences between Authorize.net and Square Point of Sale (POS). Firstly, Authorize.net is primarily a payment gateway provider, which means it facilitates the transfer of information between a payment portal and the front-end processor or bank. It's ideal for businesses that already have a merchant account and need a gateway to process online payments.
In a slightly different way, Square POS is an all-in-one solution that provides both a merchant account and a payment gateway. This makes it easier for small businesses or individuals who don't have a merchant account. Square also offers physical hardware to process payments in person, making it ideal for brick-and-mortar stores. However, while Square has a simpler pricing structure, Authorize.net might be more cost-effective for businesses with larger transaction volumes.
